You Look Like Somebody I Thought I Knew

I walked out of the unemployment office on Fulton. Sunny day. In the distance behind me I heard a man's voice calling after someone. I turned around to see him way down there. Waving. Running. There were a few other people up and down the block. I wondered who he wanted. There was no anger in his voice, no urgency. Maybe he'd just seen a friend pass by.

His shouts grew louder. I reached an intersection and was halfway across when I realized he was right behind me now. He'd been calling out to me.

I turned around and he stopped dead in the crosswalk, disappointed and confused.

"Oh," he said. "You look like somebody I thought I knew."
