I awoke with a melody in my head, a simple one, and I wondered if it was truly original. I couldn’t think of any reason it wasn’t so I vowed to record it right away, soon, right after I brushed my teeth. It occurred to me I needed to play it in my head continuously until then, to make sure I didn’t forget it. I guess it was simple in the manner of an Allman Brothers melody so I thought of them for a while, the crippling tragedies, their weekslong annual residencies on the Upper West Side that I never attended. And as I was making my coffee I remembered there was something I meant to remember, the melody. And it was gone.
